Saoirse Ronan and Harris Dickinson previously starred together in See How They Run (2022)
Plot
Follow the story of a group in London during the Second World War bombing of the British capital. Steve McQueen’s new film, Blitz, premiered at the London Film Festival last night. Simply outstanding.
Weller, like the piano playing, loving grandfather
Young Elliott Heffernan gives a monumentally confident and honest performance, Sairse Ronan is as great as ever, and beloved British actors Stephen Graham, Kathy Burke, Benjamin Clementine and perhaps my favorite left-field cast in recent history, Paul. Also, Hans Zimmer’s score, with his absolute mastery, lets you know that something is going to happen, but you’re never quite sure what. At times the film can feel big and epic, yet at others it can feel completely localized and intimate as London in flames moves to intimate London street scenes, foyers and lots of small shops and businesses.
whom they do not know (take tissue)
You don’t see or hear the enemy, only the bombs and the air raid sirens warning them. Full of fear and hope, singing in the underground to keep your spirits up, brotherhood in the bomb factory, selfless characters who look out for them. The film’s diversity reflects what London was like in 1940, and you’ve never seen it on film before.
I can’t wait to see it again
It is always a timely reminder that those who divide society destroy society. Best seen on a big screen with loud sound. I hope he gets what he deserves in the awards season, his performance in hosting SMQ 2 is a definite possibility.
