Refers to Film Junk Podcast: Episode 961: In a Violent Nature + TIFF 2024 (2024)
Plot
Leonard Fife, one of the 60,000 deserters who fled to Canada to avoid service in Vietnam, shares all his secrets to unravel his mythological life. This is the second time Paul Schrader has directed one of Banks’ 39 novels for the screen, after its adaptation Affliction (1997).
I saw it in Cannes, at the film’s premiere
OH, CANADA is a highly original film from one of the masters of cinema, a true work of art. The film is beautifully crafted with strong visual appeal.
It has beautiful cinematography and superb production design
The acting is strong, especially Richard Gere as the title character. He gives a wonderful and unforgettable performance in the spirit of Jack Nicholson in FIVE EASY PIECES – a complex, not always likeable, but engaging character.
39’s greatest achievements and a gift for film lovers
It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I think it’s one of Paul Schrader’s teas. Recommended.
